Day 15:- Head full of rags

This evening I have decided to rag roll my hair in search of the perfect curl, I have naturally curly hair that just tends to do as it pleases and its never what I want when I want. As for curling tongs, with my hair it can take up to 2 hours by which point I am fed up and sulking about arm ache. So what better why then with rags it only costs the price of setting lotion which I managed to find for £1 today and I have lots of bits of fabrics that are to small for anything. And the biggest bonus of all it does it all while I sleep.

(Please excuse the lack of make up, not the finest pictures of myself)

  1

Just washed and towel dried hair, was not sure how much setting lotion to apply so just went with a small amount, thought if it comes out awful it will be easier to brush out.

2

Half a head of rags rolled, started off pretty easy, then came the back of the head not sure much fun!

3

All done now just to sleep and wait.

I am still not convinced this is going to work but nothing ventured, nothing gained and it would have only cost me £1 and 2 hours of Ben laughing at me.

The one thing I have seemed to master pretty quick is the art of a brew and a gossip, I spent the afternoon at my friend Dave’s house catching up on gossip and current affairs in which time I drank 4 cups of tea luckily I have gone from 2 sugars done to 1 and hoping to get rid of  sugar all together, or by the end of the year I will have no teeth left. Without social media I do feel slightly behind everyone else, people just assume you know something because after all they did post it to facebook, even I in the past have been quoted as saying “If its not on facebook then it has not happened.”  And now 2 weeks in I have to admit I am slightly missing facebook, there is a couple of friends I have not had chance to catch up with yet and  I am wondering if they had a nice new year or if anything has changed for them, I will have to make an effort this weekend to catch up with them.

No heating is pretty awful, actually its the worse part of this project this week its making it harder to get out of bed in the morning but when I do I think I hold the world record for fastest dresser. It is also causing havoc with Ben’s work sandwich’s as he only likes them made on the morning of the day he is going to eat them and the last couple of days the butter has been frozen I can barely cut it let alone spread it. The only solution I could come up with was heating a knife up to cut a chunk off and then heating it up in a pan to a point where it could be spread. My grandmother had a coal fire in the 1950′s with a stove on it where she did all her baking and it kept the downstairs of her house warm unfortunately I have no coal fire, however it is now on my want list when we buy our own house.

My brother is coming around for dinner tomorrow, super excited to see him so much so I am going to bake him a cake tomorrow morning <3

  1. The hair looks grand! I had a further natter with my gran who said she used fairy soap to wash her hair and put either lemon juice or vinegar in the final rinse water to give her hair shine and the vinegar kept nits away too… She also used pin curling as a technique to curl her hair. Something else to try if rags don’t work.

  2. You look exactly like me when I curl my hair with rags (I am a brunette however) – although I use tissues rolled up like a sausage! (still need to buy some cloth to make into rags). My hairdresser suggested this to me and it work AMAZINGLY well. Much easier to sleep in than pin curls with bobby pins that’s for sure! However, I wait til my hair is about 80% dry (or blow dry it) then do the curls before bed. I spray setting lotion on each section as I go. Incredibly curly the next morning which takes a while to ‘brush out’. Google ‘brushing out curls’ (or pin curls) and you’ll see that there’s a real process to it (my apologies if you already know this!). Since I went to a vintage styling workshop last year I now only use shampoo and conditioner that is silicon and sulphate free. Silicon (usually anything that ends with -one on the ingredients list) coats the hair and makes it slippery (but shiny, hence the attraction to it) and therefore very hard to style especially for vintage styles. I try to only wash my hair once a week (if you don’t have lots of styling products and gunk built up in it from crappy shampoos etc) like they used to back then ;)
Good luck! I’m a 40s girl but the 50s are just as cute so I’m watching your journey with fascination and awe :)

    • I cant use google :( I am amazed how good they come out I try and only wash my hair once a week because its so thick and to much to deal with. I love the 40′s as well, its hard to believe that women going through a world war still had more glamour then most women today.
